Jay Ostler's Obituary

Having enjoyed a life filled with faith, love, and service, our husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and brother was called back to his heavenly home on Monday, March 30, 2015. Until we meet again, we will cherish the memories we shared with him.

Jay Eugene Ostler was born in Salt Lake City to Verna Kartchner and Merril Ostler on September 14, 1935. In 1955 he served an LDS mission to Brazil. For the rest of his life, he treasured this experience and the dear friends he made there. He married his sweetheart, Sarah Douglas, on December 27, 1962, in the Logan Temple. He graduated from the University of Utah in ceramic engineering. He contributed to developing solutions to problems in an array of industries, including a discovery that revolutionized the production of steel. Some of his favorite enjoyments in life were doing puzzles, studying trivia, telling and hearing jokes, watching sports, singing in the choir, buying and selling houses, and traveling with his wife.

He remained an active member of the LDS Church throughout his life and served in various callings, including two bishoprics and the high priest group leadership. His favorite calling, however, was teaching Gospel Doctrine. His teaching impacted many lives, but none so much as his childrens'. He taught them to love the scriptures and to live the gospel of Jesus Christ. He was an example to them as he continually endured great suffering with patience and faith. His testimony lives on in them.

He is survived by his wife, Sarah; children, Sally Morwood (Rick), Jay Ostler, Jr. (Bethany), Rachel Fullmer, Verna Greenwell (Brad), Rebekah Blackburn (Dennis), Camille Thompson (Jake), Doug Ostler (Alison), Mary Jensen (Tim), Julia Rocque (Ryan); sister, Judy Mayorga; 43 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Merril Ostler; and his daughter, Rosgena Mockler.
